Why Rotor-Stator Is the Right Tool for Small-Batch Work
For the common lab homogenization task — lyse a cell pellet, break up a tissue sample, emulsify a 50 mL prep — the right tool isn't always a bead mill or a glass homogenizer. Bead mills are great for high-throughput plates but overkill for a single sample. Glass Dounce grinders preserve organelles but are slow and manual. Rotor-stator homogenization sits in the middle: fast, efficient, and scales from microtubes to 250 mL beakers by swapping the probe.
The mechanism is straightforward. The rotor spins inside a stationary stator at high RPM — up to 30,000 RPM, delivering 6.3–14 m/sec linear rotor speed. The gap between rotor and stator creates a suction effect that draws the sample through a narrow annular space, where it meets high shear forces that rupture cell walls, break up tissue structure, and create emulsions in seconds.
